 | Although not a complete list, below is the citation information for over 610 of the significant sources used in researching Why Do I Love These People? and The Why Do I Love These People? Factbook. Whenever possible, we've provided links to the source material; however, please note that all of the links will take you out of The Factbook site. And while we've done our best to provide current links, those external sites may remove or change their material. Some links will forward you to a source website: still others will direct you straight to a PDF- or other document- download. Also, while we've provided access to freely distributed materials, we have also included links to material within fee-based and subscription databases including: Highbeam (www.highbeam.com); JStor (www.jstor.org); Proquest (http://www.proquest.com/proquest/); the EBSCO Electronic Journals Service (http://www.ebsco.com/home/); America's Newspapers / Newsbank (http://www.newsbank.com); and Time Magazine's archive (www.time.com), For published books in print, we've included links to Amazon (http://www.amazon.com).

 | Printed out, we estimate the Sources list would be at least 25 pages long. Because of that, if you're looking for sources relating to a particular topic, try doing a "Control + F" search of the page, using terms of interest (such as Adoption) or an author we mentioned in footnotes on a page (such as Furstenberg on Time Use). That might not find every relevant source, but it's a start that will probably find more than simply scrolling through the entire list. And, for the serious researcher, students, etc., allow us to make a few suggestions. As a starting point, we recommend Ponzetti's four volume International Encyclopedia of Marriage and Family, which has everything from entries on specific countries to issues relating to families. And we love Adams' The Handbook of World Families. It's a 2005-released single volume with information about families in 25 countries around the world – a chapter a country, each written by a national expert. We read both the Encyclopedia and the Handbook cover-to-cover, and refer to them regularly. The Encyclopedia's written to be understood by the layman. The Handbook is a considerably more dense read, but you still don't need to be a sociologist to understand most of it (and you'll probably feel like you are one after looking through it for a while.) Another one of our favorites is the very readable, and incredibly informative, Colón's A History of Children. It is an engrossing portrait of how children have been treated in every major historical era. But we warn you – the story is not a happy one. And we do not in any way recommend that children or adolescents read it. Let us repeat that. It's about children. It is not for children. With often graphic depictions of ritualized child murder, stories of child abandonment, etc., it is strictly for mature adults. And keep a box of tissues near by. You might need it. We did. For United States statistics, start with the U.S. Census Bureau. The Bureau's Census 2000 Briefs and Special Reports and Current Population Series reports (many of which, but not all, are listed below) are complete demographic portraits of U.S. population. But that's not all they have. They know everything from how many ties are given on Father's Day to how many children in the State of Iowa live with their grandparents. Also, they have some information on reports by other government agencies. For the equivalent data about Europe, try Eurostat. Or if your needs relate specifically to families and social issues, The European Observatory on the Social Situation, Demography and Family – which is sadly defunct but (for now at least) still has its publications and research on its website. The United Nations also has huge, searchable databases about well, everything everywhere. But they have so much, it can be a bit overwhelming. So for a quick source of data on children and families in more developed countries, try The Clearinghouse on International Developments in Child, Youth, and Family Policies at Columbia University, New York, NY. ________, 1940 Census Report, US Census Department, Government Printing Office, Washington DC (1941). ________, 2002 UK Time Use Survey, Housework / Work, National Statistics Online, National Statistics, United Kingdom (October 2, 2003).
